Frugal Gift Ideas for Father’s Day 2008

Father’s Day is just around the corner – June 15th - so I wanted to take a few minutes and share some frugal Father’s Day gift ideas to help Dad enjoy his big day just a little more.

IMPORTANT:  Do not – DO NOT get your dad a tie, an apron, or anything whatsoever that has “#1 Dad” emblazoned upon its face.  Give your father something he finds useful instead of something he will need to hide in the closet.

The best suggestion I can offer based on talking to tons of dads on this very subject over the years, is to bring dad breakfast in bed on Father’s Day.  Enlist the assistance of your kids where possible and prepare all of Dad’s favorite breakfast treats.  Serve them to him in bed coupled with the morning newspaper or the latest issue of his favorite magazines.

While dad enjoys his breakfast, corral the kids into a private space with a supply of construction paper, crayons, water colors, old magazines and their imaginations.  Allow and help them to create their own Father’s Day cards while Dad has his morning meal in peace.

When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, the important thing is that the meaning behind the gift should be more valuable than the gift itself.  If you plan ahead you and get the help of a friend with a digital camera to take some great photos of the kids for dad’s office, and having them printed doesn’t cost much at all!
