The Thrifty Family Parade

Published by michaelnolan at 9:40 am under tip of the day Edit This

Just when I start to wonder if anyone seems to understand the whole frugal living thing, I picked up the newspaper on Sunday and the cover story on Parade magazine is about frugal families!

Writer Lynn Schnurnberger did an excellent job covering the topic of “How America’s Thriftiest Families Save Money!” and you lucky readers of Frugal Living can even read it online. since I am sure that many of you are already frugal enough to have stopped home delivery of your newspapers. (For the record, I get the Sunday newspaper for the coupons, which more than pay for the cost of the newspaper every week.)

Are you a member of a frugal family? I would love to hear from you for a possible feature here at Frugal Living! Leave a comment and I will be in touch.

I guess my family qualifies, although only since my parents retired and moved to their current home, which has a large garden. They grow a lot of their own fruit and vegetables - they haven’t had to buy some things in 4 years - and they’ve always been good at budgeting and finding bargains. They walk wherever they can, and they recycle and compost what they can. They make things last, and they do a lot of jobs around the house themselves - they just finished tiling and grouting the kitchen and sun room. My Mam isn’t that good at being frugal with her time though…

One thing that my Da does that always makes me laugh is try to get me to guess how cheaply he got something, hoping I’ll guess too high. Well, the best way to say “I paid £10 for this” in Irish literally translates as “I didn’t give but £10 for this”, which is a good illustration of the general attitude of the older generation here.
