Safe Travel Tips - The Car

Published by michaelnolan at 6:00 am under tip of the day Edit This

I’m headed out of town for a few days, so I thought I would take a moment and share a few of my driving and car related tips while I am putting them into use:

  • If you have cruise control, use it - but only at a moderate rate of speed.d  It will keep you more relaxed behind the wheel and save you money on fuel at the same time.
  • Take rest breaks every so often to keep yourself alert.  Taking ten minutes out of the car to stretch, walk and grab a quick snack will increase your awareness and just may save your life or the life of someone else when you fall asleep at the wheel!
  • An open umbrella indoors may be bad luck, but opening one and leaving it on your car seat will help you to avoid burning your legs when you get back in on a hot day!

Living in moderate climates, as I always have, I’ve never had to deal with over-heated seats and their effect on shorts-clad legs! That’s a good tip, Mister Nolan!

I would also recommend getting a cooler bag and bringing your snacks with you; sure, there’s plenty of places along the way where you can buy food, but the rest stops really make you pay for the pleasure.

Thanks for the comments, travelling_blackbird and Nairobian!

t_b: the cooler bag is an excellent idea! I think people have lost their way when it comes to one word - sustainability. We are a culture these days of immediate satisfaction and as a result we’d rather stop at a convenience store and pay hyper-inflated prices for items we already have at home and paid a fraction of the price for.
