Libraries Aren’t Just for Term Papers
I drove to see my mother while she was in town yesterday and to go through a few boxes of items that largely should have been disposed of years ago, but never were.
Among the clutter (and believe me when I tell you there was a lot of clutter), I came across my old library card and immediately flashed back to the time a little more than a year ago when I would make a weekly trek to my local library to exchange books and even check out music CDs and DVDs.
It has been far too long since I spent some time perusing the shelves for new and wonderful things to read and learn. It isn’t that I have become lazy, I’ve just had work commitments that interfered with the weekly ritual. When I visited my local library’s web site this morning I discovered a rather respectable calendar of events that exceeded the usual children’s story time. Among this month’s listings were such items as
- art and photography exhibits
- school supply giveaways
- adult morning book clubs
- computer classes
- budgeting classes
- crochet classes
The list goes on. Needless to say I was impressed to see the collection and while I may not make it to the class to perfect my chain stitch, it did my heart good to know that there were so many free and low cost things to do at the public library beyond checking out a few dusty books.
