Smart Ways to Save in the Kitchen

I’ve talked here about make ahead meals but I feel it should be mentioned again.  This idea is not a new one of course, but in a generation that seems to have lost sight of anything food related that doesn’t come from a drive through window or in a microwave safe container it may not be obvious to everyone.  Here are a few tips:

  1. The next time you make a dish such as chili or lasagna, double the recipe.  Make twice as much and freeze the doubled portion.  The next time you want that dish, your prep work is complete and all you have to do is heat it and eat it.
  2. Freeze leftover pasta.  It will come back to life well when dropped into a pot of rapidly boiling water.
  3. If you have ground beef that is already thawed and may go bad before you use it, brown it with some chopped onion and peppers and freeze it.  This is perfect to add to a jar of store bought pasta sauce for a quick last-minute meal anytime.
