Frugal Giving
As a fulltime freelancer I am responsible for my own taxes. Because I am not an employee, no one withholds anything on my behalf which means that come tax time I will owe a huge chunk of change that isn’t going to be fun to have to pay. One of the things that I have to do each year is make sure that I’ve done my share of charitable contributions. Even before I was an independent contractor I was an active giver, so it isn’t that much of a stretch. There was a time though when I barely had enough money to pay for my own food, much less trying to write a $10 check to a charity. That was when I learned how I could help people who were less fortunate than I even when I didn’t have any money myself.
Volunteer!
Find a local charitable organization whose work you believe in. It might be a Boys and Girls Club or a Soup Kitchen. For that matter it might not even be an organization at all. Does the elderly widow down the road need someone to help with her yard? What about someone to take her to the grocery store on occasion?
It doesn’t matter if you have all the money in the world or no money at all, you can afford to give a little of your time to someone else who needs some help. It will make other people’s lives richer and it will make you feel like a million bucks.
